1、instead
作副词意思是代替；反而，但它的意思更侧重于“取而代之”这层意思.所以往往翻译成“相反地”。
2、however
作副词意思有然而；无论如何；不管多么。作连词意思是不管怎样，不过,表示一种转折,说明后面陈述的内容与前面的内容相反。
“反而”与“不过，但是”的区别，就是“instead”和“however”的区别，eg:
我很累，但是我能坚持，（这里就用：I feel a bit tired. However, I can hold on.）
这消息非但没有令她不安,反而产生了一种奇怪的镇定效果。
这里就用（Instead of disturbing her, the news had a strangely calming effect.）
看两个例句：
I will go there though she is unhappy.However,her mother will go there instead.
It was raining hard. However, we went out to look for the boy.
3、instead
英式读法是[ɪn'sted]；美式读法是[ɪn'sted]。
4、however
英式读法是[haʊ'evə(r)]；美式读法是[haʊ'evər]。
5、instead和however不是连词,而是副词.
6、however：主要强调通过增加某个令人吃惊或者进行比较的情况/评论对前面动作加以说明和修正。（强调对比让步关系）
7、instead 主要强调做出另外一个不同之前的一个选择。（强调取舍关系）
